DAILY REFLECTION

“Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.”
Proverbs 3:27

My friend Dr. Tim, now a respected cardiologist, grew up in poverty. As a schoolboy, he often walked home hungry because his family could barely make ends meet. Yet a compassionate hawker noticed his need and, without expecting anything in return, regularly offered him a warm meal. That simple act of kindness became a turning point in his life.

Determined to rise above his circumstances, he taught tuition to support himself and eventually earned a scholarship to study medicine overseas. Years later, he returned home—not merely as a doctor, but as the chief cardiologist of the very hospital serving his hometown.

One evening, the same hawker suffered a massive heart attack. His family rushed him to the hospital, where Dr. Tim immediately recognised the man who had once fed a hungry boy. Without hesitation, he mobilised the medical team, ensured the patient received the best possible care, arranged for a private room, and successfully performed the life-saving procedure. Quietly, he paid the entire hospital bill himself and marked it “anonymous,” seeking no recognition for his generosity.

Dr. Tim’s story beautifully illustrates the wisdom of Proverbs 3:27. God often places opportunities to do good directly before us. He has entrusted us with time, resources, abilities, and influence—not to keep for ourselves, but to bless others. When it is within our power to help, we are called to respond promptly, not postpone or assume someone else will step in. Delayed obedience can deepen another person’s suffering, while timely compassion can bring healing, hope, and even save a life.

Jesus lived this truth perfectly. He never ignored those in need but responded immediately with mercy, compassion, and love. As His followers, we are called to do the same. Every opportunity to serve is a divine appointment. If God has given you the ability to help today, do not delay. When we willingly become channels of His grace, we reflect Christ’s heart, bring hope to a hurting world, and glorify the God who has been so generous to us.
