True Repentance Begins with Honesty and Humility

“Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.”
Proverbs 28:13

Last night, a close friend who serves as a church elder called seeking my counsel. His wife had discovered his extramarital affair and was considering divorce. He asked whether he should still serve Holy Communion this coming Sunday.

I gently reminded him that his immediate concern should not be preserving his ministry position, but confronting his sin with honesty, humility, and genuine repentance.

I encouraged him to confess openly to his pastor and church leaders, accept accountability, and voluntarily step aside from serving Communion while receiving pastoral guidance.

Proverbs 28:13 reminds us that concealing sin leads to spiritual destruction, while confession and turning away from wrongdoing open the door to God’s mercy.

True repentance is more than regret or fear of consequences. It requires taking full responsibility, ending sinful behaviour, seeking appropriate help, and demonstrating lasting transformation.

For spiritual leaders, integrity matters more than position. When trust is broken, restoration begins not with defending one’s reputation, but with acknowledging wrongdoing and submitting to godly correction.

I also reminded him that his wife had suffered a painful betrayal. She deserves compassion, time to heal, and freedom to make her own decisions without pressure. Forgiveness cannot be demanded, nor can reconciliation be rushed.

God’s grace offers forgiveness and hope, but it does not remove the consequences of sin.

True repentance is measured not by how quickly we regain our position, but by how faithfully we turn back to God.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, grant us humble hearts to confess our sins, courage to accept correction, and grace to walk in righteousness. Bring healing to those wounded by betrayal. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
