“For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.”
James 3:16
Yesterday, a dear friend called me, asking whether he should sign divorce papers. Mark and Alice (not their real names) had been married for 35 years and had no children. Alice was a successful corporate executive with a substantial income, while Mark worked as a salesman. Instead of celebrating his wife’s success, Mark gradually became envious of her achievements and the respect she received. His desire to be more admired slowly grew into selfish ambition. What began as hidden jealousy soon led to constant arguments, deep resentment, and emotional distance. Although Alice faithfully supported much of their household, she eventually discovered that Mark was having an affair. That betrayal shattered the already fragile foundation of their marriage. Instead of becoming partners in life, they had become rivals, destroying the covenant they had once vowed to protect.
James 3:16 exposes the root of such tragedy: “For where envy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every evil practice.” Envy and selfish ambition seldom erupt suddenly. They take root whenever we compare ourselves with others instead of finding our identity and security in Christ. Envy whispers that another person’s success diminishes our worth, while selfish ambition values personal recognition above love, humility, and faithfulness. Left unchecked, these attitudes bear the bitter fruit of conflict, deception, betrayal, and broken relationships.
Mark and Alice’s story reminds us that the greatest battles are fought not around us but within us. We must invite the Holy Spirit to search our hearts and uproot every trace of envy, pride, and selfish ambition before they take hold. God calls us to rejoice in the blessings of others, to serve rather than compete, and to seek His approval above human applause. When Christ rules our hearts, rivalry gives way to gratitude, relationships are restored, and His peace replaces disorder. True joy is found not in surpassing others, but in faithfully becoming the person God created us to be.
