“For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.”

My friend Jack’s story reveals the devastating consequences of a heart ruled by selfish ambition and unresolved sin. After receiving divorce papers from his wife’s lawyer, he sincerely repented and desperately longed to restore the marriage shattered by his unfaithfulness. But the wounds of betrayal ran too deep. At the same time, he remained trapped in an unhealthy relationship with his mistress, who exerted emotional control over him. Overwhelmed by guilt, frustration, and inner turmoil, he often returned home late and sought escape in alcohol, only deepening the conflict and driving his family further apart.

James 3:16 explains the root of this destructive cycle: “For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every evil practice.” Whenever our hearts are driven by self-centred desires instead of submission to Christ, chaos inevitably follows. Relationships fracture, trust erodes, and sin multiplies. A heart ruled by self can never produce lasting peace.

The good news is that Christ transforms us from the inside out. When He reigns over our hearts, selfish ambition gives way to humility, jealousy is replaced by gratitude, and conflict yields to peace. His kingdom is characterised by peace, unity, and righteousness—the very opposite of envy, pride, and rivalry.

Jesus, the Prince of Peace, restores what sin has broken. As we surrender our motives to Him, He enables us to love rather than compete, to serve rather than seek recognition, and to pursue His glory instead of our own. Hearts centred on Christ become instruments of reconciliation, reflecting His grace in every relationship.

James 3:16 reminds us that as we yield every motive to Him, He replaces disorder with His peace, division with unity, and selfishness with righteousness, enabling us to become powerful witnesses of His transforming grace.
